Listening to Split Silk’s Be the Divine following their previous series of EPs is like stepping out of sepia-toned Kansas into the technicolor world of Oz. Be the Divine is post-hardcore with an unabashed feminine perspective on our connection with the natural world, technology-induced detachment, and existing outside of society's arbitrary standards for normality. 2024’s Bitter EP offered a taste of what Split Silk could sound like as a trio. Lucca Cassandra Carver fronts the band on guitars and vocals with Will Morris and Lucía Alejandra Carreño joining her on drums and bass respectively. Split Silk is the first band where these three are playing these roles. That, alongside the trio’s faith in each other as creative partners brings a liberatory quality to their craft. You can hear them embodying the utopian ideals they espouse all throughout Be the Divine. Carver is a classicist for the great mid-century American songwriters, that reverence sees her writing post-hardcore that is as indebted to the Brill Building’s crafted arrangements as it is to Unwound’s feedback-soaked riffs. Be the Divine, is a righteous call to shed your fears and embrace the spiritually rich world we deserve and there is not a better example found in this world.
